Master Tailor Paul Mohanani,
by Cezar Greif of GQ of Men’s fashion Magazine.
Who hasn’t dreamt of owning custom-made suits? With Paul’s Creations, such a dream can come true at almost the same price as a ready-to-wear item you’d pick off the rack of a major department store. How is it possible? Paul’s Creations is based in America, where they design your suit. But they then have the suit made in Hong Kong. By going to tax-free Hong Kong, they save substantially on operating cost and can have your suit made at very competitive prices. But where did it all start? Very far away, it turns out.
“From my childhood, I’ve always considered myself lucky to have a great family who supported my dreams,” says founder and designer Paul Mohanani. “I was number three in a big family, in Bombay, India. Due to our financial situation, my father had to put me to work at the age of seventeen. I was very much into designing. I was looking at fashion magazines, at people who are dressed. I naturally ended up getting into the clothing business.”
After going to a design college in Hong Kong and settling in Los Angeles, Paul Mohanani launched his own company in 1975, Paul’s Creations. “My father first went to Hong Kong around 1955, after the India-Pakistan partition,” reveals Paul. “He started all by himself. Then me and my brother went into the business.” Paul’s Creation uses small family-owned businesses in Hong Kong to make the clothes. They’ve done this for several generations. It starts with the pattern, and there is much more attention to the garment. It’s like bespoke tailoring, benefiting from Paul Mohanani’s great eye for detail. Recently, they’ve expanded their network by adding ateliers in Bangkok and Jerusalem.
But why go the tailor-made route if you want a suit and don’t want to spend a lot? Paul Mohanani doesn’t mind spending time educating new customers. “The fabric you can get in off- the-rack clothing is not the same,” he explains. “When you tailor-make, you produce at a much higher quality level.”
For Paul’s Creations suits, Paul designs the pattern and then the world's finest fabrics are carefully selected, mainly from England. “Because of their mills, they produce the best quality,” says Paul. “But we also have German and Italian fabrics, which are a bit more delicate.” There are over 3,000 fabrics to choose from -- English flannels and worsteds, Scottish tweeds, fine cashmere, French gabardines and silk mohair from Italy. Some fabrics you can’t even find in stores, they’re made specially for Paul. He does one-of-a-kind pieces as well, with fabrics that have now been discontinued. All garments are individually hand-cut by tailor from the pattern designed by Paul - these suits are known for having well- proportioned linings and the finest trimmings available.
“We take twenty to twenty-five measurements on men,” explains Paul. “Women have even more details. The suits are shipped directly to the customers and repairs are included in the price. Turnaround is 2-4 weeks.”
But Paul’s Creations is not stuck in the past. The company is mindful of the difficulties its customers are experiencing due to the covid-19 situation. The strictest safety guidelines are applied to the whole creation process, and a new discounted price is proposed for both women and men’s suits. Furthermore, in the next few weeks, a new system will be unveiled enabling customers to take their own measurements from the comfort of their home, eliminating the need to go to a tailor. They also receive a FREE video conference call with Master Tailor Paul Mohanani himself. Photos of the fabric and material are sent remotely, making the whole process practical and safe. An old tradition meets the most up-to-date technology to create tailoring 3.0 for the modern age. Now with the Zoom advantage, they are able to deliver their suits in just a few weeks.

"I have worked with Paul's company Paul's Creations by Civinity to make all my business clothes since 1985 including shirts, pants, suits (when I used to wear them daily) and sport coats. His service and commitment are excellent and I've been happy with the garments every time. Paul has my measurements and knows my preferences so it is easy to place my orders...what's not easy is to select the materials from the myriad of choices he has ! I then need to be a bit patient while the order is being made in Hong Kong and shipped to me but Paul keeps me posted. Then one day it arrives and it's so fun to open the package with all my new clothes ! H.Barnett- LA Realty Partners Los Angeles, CA
I have worked with Paul's Creations since the early 1990s. He always has used the finest materials and the tam that he works with in Hong Kong have always produced excellent products for me. At 6’4” 250 I am not an easy person to fit, but all of my shirts and suits fit perfectly. As a CPA, my look has always been very important, and I have never been disappointed. As my children have graduated into the working world, I have sent them off in suits from Civinity. It has been a great partnership for me for many years. James D. Goeller Crowe LLP San Francisco, Ca
Paul, You are always so considerate and courteous. Fantastic products with a varying range of 'custom' features like colors, quality materials, personal measurements and a true personal touch. I will say a more realistic view of order arrival times might be something to work on, even prior to your health and this covid world. Take good care and keep getting healthier my friend. I shopped with Paul going back to 1988 when he had a small store front. His work has always been about making the customer happy and increasing sales through word of mouth. Every person I have referred to Paul has thanked me. No reservations when I say to expect quality care with kindness and it will be given. I have brought him expensive suits from world-known TOP-TIER brand names from the most expensive / exclusive department stores here and abroad. I asked Paul to copy them in lighter fabrics and other colors. They came out better than the original. I have had tuxedo shirts and full bow ties made by Paul. All came out as exquisite as one might hope. Dress shirts of Egyptian and of Sea-Island cotton as if made of clouds, soft and smooth. Want class? Have your initials put in the MIDDLE of a pocket. To those that know, the shirt was custom made for you and not pre-made with initials added to the end of the cuff on the way out the door. His work is as bespoke as those of Savile Row in London. I have tried both and for the same quality at one-third the price, Paul is impossible to beat.
Paul Mohanani is an act on his own as far as his expertise in creating a garment, His expertise of Fabric, thread and tailoring is next to none. Paul is trustworthy prompt and tell you the way it is. We believe we do public service by writing these lines.
Paul Mohanani has been my tailor for about 30 years. I am not his usual customer. I do arts and entertainment programs from the turn of the previous century. When I first met him I asked if he could make period suits. He told me if I provided a picture, he could. What results! The work is outstanding, I get constant compliments, and I keep adding outfits to my wardrobe. He is very detail oriented, makes sure it is done right, and offers many suggestions. Here are a few photos of his company’s superb sartorial skills. Suits pictured are styled from 1890s to 1910s. Galen Wilkes
